WhatsApp Now Available For Windows and Mac PC Without Using Emulators

Ø  Go to the Google Play Store and install the updated version of WhatsApp.
Ø  Open the latest version of WhatsApp which you just installed.
Ø  Press the Options button where you should see a link called “WhatsApp Web”
Ø  Click on that, you should now see a QR Scanner
Ø  Now go to your PC and make sure that you are connected to the internet.
Ø  Open Google Chrome Browser and go to the website http://web.whatsapp.com
Ø  You will see a QR code on this website.
Ø  Now take your mobile phone with QR scanner of WhatsApp and scan the code.
Ø  Boom, your WhatsApp profile, messages, contacts and media are on your PC.
Ø  You can send messages and chat from your PC only.

Note: The mobile linked to the PC should be connected to the internet at all times while you are using the WhatsApp on your PC (Google Chrome) and ensure that you have downloaded and install the latest version of WhatsApp on your phone.

This only works on Android operating system for now. Apple users (iOS) should chill till further notice.

How Does an Operating System Work?

An Operating System is the application that controls every aspect of a computer. The most commonly used operating systems are Windows, UNIX and Macintosh. For simplicity, an operating system carries out two basic functions:

(1) It serves as a manger for the hardware and software resources held in the system; and

(2) It deals with hardware without the applications having to know every aspect along the way.

The duties of the operating system fall into six different categories: processor management, memory management, device management, storage management, application interface and user interface.

Processor Management
Processor management involves the certainty that all applications and processes get the appropriate amount of time from the processor so that it can function properly. It also involves taking advantage of as many processor cycles as it possibly can to make everything work together properly. The operating system uses the process or thread of the processor to carry out these functions and it continuously switches between processes at the rate of thousands of processes per second.

Memory Management
Memory management is the process of ensuring that each process has the amount of memory needed to execute the task so that processes do not steal memory from each other. Another part of memory management is managing each type of memory so that it is used properly.

Device Management
Every piece of hardware uses a driver, a special program, to communicate with the system. The operating system uses the drivers as a translator between the electrical signals from the hardware and the programming code found in applications. The driver takes data from the operating system to the device and vice versa. The operating system controls this process by calling on the appropriate driver when it is needed.

Application Program Interface
Just like hardware has drivers, applications have application program interfaces (APIs). APIs allow the programmers to use parts of the operating system and computer to carry out certain functions. The operating system holds all of the APIs that are recognizable to the computer and plays the role of interpreter for the APIs. It then sends the data required so that the function is carried out.

User Interface
The user interface aspect of the operating system manages the interaction between the user and computer. Many operating systems use graphical user interfaces, which mean that it uses images and icons to communicate with the user. The operating system once again plays the role of interpreter to communicate with both the user and the computer in languages that they both understand.


                           Types of Operating Systems

There are four types of Operating System that you can use. Choosing one depends on the kind of task you want to perform on the computer.
  • Single User, Single Task
This OS is preferred for simple, repetitive tasks and is used in Palm handheld PCs.

  • Single User, Multi-Task
It is the most common Os you will see around you. It includes Windows and MacOS as well. Useful for performing multiple tasks at the same time, like browsing the Internet while listening to music.

  • Multi-User
This OS is used by a community of users that apply the OS for similar functions. Running this type of OS requires a lot of resources and maintenance. Unix is one such OS.

  • Real-Time Operating Systems
An RTOS rarely has any user interface. It is mainly used for managing resources within the computer and does not rely on or stop for the user's input. It works like a fully automated assembly line that does not need manual interactions.

Windows, Linux, Sun Solaris and Macintosh are no doubt some of the most popular computer OS. But there are individuals who have designed their own operating system and they use it on their local machines. Before we start taking a sneak peek at the operating systems for computers, let us try to understand what a computer operating system is.

What is a Computer Operating System?
In simple words, a computer operating system can be said to be the most important software that runs on a computer. It manages the computer's memory, processes, and all of its software and hardware. It also allows you to communicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the computer's "language". Without an operating system, a computer is useless. In short, it is more like a foundation to which all other applications rely on. Types of Computer Operating Systems

Operating systems can be classified as follows:

Multithreading OS
These are the operating systems that allow different parts of the same software to run concurrently. Operating systems like Windows 9X, ME, XP, Vista, 7 and Linux are examples of this type of operating system.

Multitasking OS
This kind of operating system allows more than one program to run concurrently.

GUI OS
GUI stands for Graphical User Interface. Those operating systems like Windows 98, XP, ME, Vista, 7 and Linux, which allow users to navigate with the help of a mouse and have graphic representation of every process or application are classified into this type of operating system.

Multiprocessing OS
This operating system supports running a program on more than one CPU.

Multi-user OS
Operating systems which allow more than one user to log in to the computer system at the same time and use it, can be classified as multi-user operating system. Linux is an example of this type of operating system, which allows six users to login at the same time and user the operating system.

Real time OS
Responds to input instantly. General-purpose operating systems, such as DOSS and UNIX, are not real-time.

Features of an Operating System

  • Managing Hardware and Software

As already mentioned, it is the computer operating system that causes the hardware and software in a computer to interact with each other. It is also the platform that causes one software in the computer to communicate with another. Once the operating system in a computer loads during the booting up process, other application software can be loaded into the computer.
  • Consistent Application Program Interface

Application Program Interface which software development professionals refer to as APIs allow the applications that runs on one computer to run on another computer having the same operating system. It is thus important that the operating system has a consistent API. Undoubtedly, every operating system will have certain requirements, but it should be flexible enough to support computer hardware from different vendors.
  • Program Execution

It is up to the operating system to execute all the programs running in it. It is a rather complicated process. It may have to allow multitasking and allow different programs to run at the same time and share the system resources. It needs to allot RAM space to different applications running on the computer. The execution of more than one program may also require the operating system to prioritize the operations running on the computer.
  • Interrupts

The operating system needs to support a good number of interrupts to react with the immediate external environment. On receiving an interrupt it should have the capability to stop the current execution and start off a new process. Interrupting is not a very simple process. On receiving an interrupt, the computer operating system should be such that they immediately save the status of the current applications and start executing the code of that particular interrupt.
  • Memory Management

As already mentioned in the section on program execution, it is up to the computer operating system to provide memory to the different programs running on the computer. It has to prioritize and allocate memory to each application. Even when data is saved in a secondary storage device, it is the operating system that decides how that particular chunk of information should be stored.
  • Accessing Data

The data required by any particular application software for its smooth running needs to be accessed by the operating system. The operating system stores data in a particular storage area in such a way that the data can be retrieved as and when required. The file system that different computers use may be different. The operating system needs to support these different file systems. Let us try to understand this with an example. Some computers may be using the FAT 32 file system, while some may be using the NTFS file system. Irrespective of which file system is being used, the operating system should provide support for the same. However, not all operating systems support all types of file systems.
  • Networking

We are in the age of networking. Computers need to communicate with each other. A computer without Internet is not even imaginable. It is the task of the operating system to provide the required networking features. It should have features to allow two or more computers to connect and form a network or connect to the Internet.
  • Security

Last but not the least, in today's age, security that an operating system should provide is undoubtedly one of its most important features. Right from setting passwords for logging in, to providing firewall protection; everything comes under the tasks of an operating system. Some network utilities may need file sharing, printer sharing and using TCP/IP protocols. Hence, it becomes very important for the computer operating system to provide proper security so that the computer's security is not compromised in such cases.

  • Unix-like Operating Systems
We are all aware of the fact that Unix is an open source operating system. By open source, we mean that its source code is kept free for changes. No doubt, for a full version Linux, you will need to have the license key from the vendor from whom you are getting the operating system. There are various vendors like Red Hat, Fedora, etc. who design Linux operating system.

History of Unix
Unix operating system is designed by many vendors today. However, the success of Unix can be attributed to the AT&T's Bell Laboratories from where it was released in the early 1970s. By the end of the 1970s most people who had done pioneering work in the success of this operating system were holding important positions in the computer world. They insisted on using Unix. Government bodies, educational institutions and electronic companies, all continued to use Unix. This led to various vendors entering into this market and producing their own versions of Unix. In 1980, 'The Open Group' or X/Open Company Ltd. was formed by a group of vendors to limit the encroachment by larger companies who wanted to control the system interface. Open Systems had to meed specific standards and Unix system was chosen as the platform for the open systems. In 1993, AT&T sold its Unix System Laboratories to Novell and in 1995, SCO bought the same from Novell. In 1995 X/Open introduced the Unix 95 brand for computer systems. It was meant to guarantee the Single Unix specification.

  • Microsoft Disk Operating System (MSDOS)
It is the operating system, which probably marks the rise of Microsoft. DOS is another operating system which has the basic feature of CUI (Character User Interface) mode. You need to learn the commands. Undoubtedly, it was one of the most powerful operating systems of its time and Microsoft continuously tweaked and improved this product, which led them to capture a significant market.

History of MSDOS
The original version of DOS, QDOS was purchased by Microsoft from Seattle Computer Products in 1981. Microsoft kept on improving this product and by 1984, they had added support for high density floppy disks, 32 MB hard disks and networking. Microsoft continued to release different versions of DOS and worked on the bugs present in those versions. By 1993, Microsoft had included the MOVE command, MSBACKUP and a simple anti-virus program and disk defragmenter. In 1994, Microsoft licensed a disk compression package called DriveSpace and included it in its DOS version. This version is also a part of the Windows 95 operating system.

  • Macintosh
Macintosh is the line of operating systems, developed and marketed by Apple Inc. It is the primary operating system of Apple Computers right from 1984. It is a Unix based operating system. This operating system is often credited for the start of the graphical user interface systems.

History of MAC OS
Starting in early 1979, the Macintosh project was meant to build an operating system that will be easy to use for the average user. Unlike the IBM PC which used 8KB of system ROM for power on self test (POST) MAC ROM was larger (64 KB). The first version of Macintosh was an easy contrast from the operating systems of that time. Users no longer had to type commands. Newer versions of Macintosh were launched and it still holds a great graphical user interface system. The latest version in MAC OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

  • Microsoft Windows
Here I am referring to the Windows operating system. It is the most widely used operating system in the world and again a product from Microsoft. The latest version is Microsoft Windows 7. Microsoft Windows was an operating system that included support for a variety of features before other operating systems had included them. The large market that they captured led to the production of a wide range of software specifically meant for the Windows operating system.

History of Microsoft Windows
In November 10, 1983, Microsoft announced the launch of Microsoft Windows, which was nothing but an extension of the MS DOS operating system. This marked the beginning of the GUI era. The success that they saw caused them to work upon newer versions of Windows. Windows 95 was acclaimed to a greater extent when it was released in 1995. The year 2000 saw the release of Windows ME after Windows 98 in 1998 and finally there was Windows XP, which was released in the year 2001. All these operating systems included a variety of features. There was constant improvement with each version and the GUI got better and better. The year 2006 saw the release of Windows Vista with an even better graphical interface as compared to Windows XP, but it did have its own drawbacks. Finally Microsoft brought Windows 7 to the markets in March 2010, and most of the problems with Windows Vista were fixed.

Which Operating System to Choose?
Well, it all depends on type of work you intend to do. There are various other factors that you need to consider. If you are into computer administration, learning how to use Unix based operating systems will definitely prove helpful to you. For a common man, the best operating system is one, which is easy to use. It is also important to find out whether software manufacturers provide versions that are compatible with your computer operating system. All other features that have been mentioned above should form the basis of your choice of your computer operating system. Also check for features like network support and character set support when using an operating system. They may not be important for everyone, but these features are of considerable importance for specific kind of jobs.

A server has many functions, and these functions come in different types to facilitate different uses.

Let’s take a look at what a server really is before proceeding to the various types of network servers we have so as to gain a better understanding of how this complex web of devices make the Internet possible.

What is a Server?

A server is a system (software and compatible computer hardware) that responds to requests across a computer network to provide, or help to provide, various network services. By using a server, one can securely share files and resources like fax machines and printers. Hence, with a server network, employees can access the Internet or company e-mail simultaneously.

  • Server Platform: Server platform is the fundamental hardware or software for a system which acts as an engine that drives the server. It is often used synonymously with an operating system.

  • Application Server: Also known as a type of middleware, it occupies a substantial amount of computing region between database servers and the end user, and is commonly used to connect the two.

  • Audio/Video Server: It provides multimedia capabilities to websites by helping the user to broadcast streaming multimedia content.

  • Chat Server: It serves the users to exchange data in an environment similar to Internet newsgroup which provides real-time discussion capabilities.

  • Fax Server: It is one of the best options for organizations that seek minimum incoming and outgoing telephone resources, but require to fax actual documents.

  • FTP Server: It works on one of the oldest of the Internet services, the file transfer protocol. It provides a secure file transfer between computers while ensuring file security and transfer control.

  • Groupware Server: It is a software designed that enables the users to work together, irrespective of the location, through the Internet or a corporate intranet and to function together in a virtual atmosphere.

  • Virtual Servers: A virtual server is just like a physical computer because it is committed to an individual customer's demands, can be individually booted and maintains privacy of a separate computer. Basically, the distance among shared and dedicated (hosting) servers is reduced providing freedom to other customers, at a less cost. Now, it has become omnipresent in the data center.


  • Web Server: It provides static content to a web browser by loading a file from a disk and transferring it across the network to the user's web browser. This exchange is intermediated by the browser and the server, communicating using HTTP.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Computer Networks

Computer Networking is an essential part of any organization these days. In this article, we will be checking out the major advantages and disadvantages of Computer Networks.

A computer network is defined as a set of electronically connected computers which can share information and resources among themselves. There are communication protocols that explain how this sharing should take place.

Like every other technological prospect, computer networks come with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

               Advantages of Networks

File Sharing

The major advantage of a computer network is that is allows file sharing and remote file access. A person sitting at one workstation that is connected to a network can easily see files present on another workstation, provided he is authorized to do so. This saves him/her the hassle of carrying a storage device every time data needs to be transported from one system to another. Further, a central database means that anyone on that network can access a file and/or update it. If files are stored on a server and all of its clients share that storage capacity, then it becomes easier to make a file available to multiple users.

Resource Sharing

Resource sharing is another important benefit of a computer network. For example, if there are twelve employees in an organization, each having their own computer, they will require twelve modems and twelve printers if they want to use the resources at the same time. A computer network, on the other hand, provides a cheaper alternative by the provision of resource sharing. All the computers can be interconnected using a network, and just one modem and printer can efficiently provide the services to all twelve users.

Inexpensive Set-Up

Shared resources mean reduction in hardware costs. Shared files mean reduction in memory requirement, which indirectly means reduction in file storage expenses. A particular software can be installed only once on the server and made available across all connected computers at once. This saves the expense of buying and installing the same software as many times for as many users.

Flexible Handling

A user can log on to a computer anywhere on the network and access his files. This offers flexibility to the user as to where he should be during the course of his routine. A network also allows the network administrator to choose which user on the network has what specific permissions to handle a file. For example, the network administrator can allot different permissions to User A and User B for File XYZ. According to these permissions, User A can read and modify File XYZ, but User B cannot modify the file. The permission set for User B is read-only. This offers immense flexibility against unwarranted access to important data.

Increased Storage Capacity

Since there is more than one computer on a network which can easily share files, the issue of storage capacity gets resolved to a great extent. A standalone computer might fall short of storage memory, but when many computers are on a network, the memory of different computers can be used in such a case. One can also design a storage server on the network in order to have a huge storage capacity.

               Disadvantages of Networks

Security Concerns

One of the major drawbacks of computer networks is the security issues that are involved. If a computer is a standalone computer, physical access becomes necessary for any kind of data theft. However, if a computer is on a network, a hacker can get unauthorized access by using different tools. In case of big organizations, various network security software need to be used to prevent theft of any confidential and classified data.

Virus and Malware

If even one computer on a network gets affected by a virus, there is a possible threat for the other systems getting affected too. Viruses can spread on a network easily, because of the inter-connectivity of workstations. Moreover, multiple systems with common resources are the perfect breeding ground for viruses that multiply. Similarly, if malware gets accidentally installed on the central server, all clients in the network that are connected to that server will get affected automatically.

Lack of Robustness

If the main file server of a computer network breaks down, the entire system becomes useless. If there is a central linking server or a bridging device in the network, and it fails, the entire network will come to a standstill. In case of big networks, the file server should be a powerful computer, which often makes setting up and maintaining the system doubly expensive.

Needs An Efficient Handler

The technical skills and know-how required to operate and administer a computer network is considerably high. Any user with just the basic skills cannot do this job. Also, the responsibility that comes with such a job is high, since allotting username-passwords and permissions to users in the network are also the network administrator's duties. Similarly, network connection and configuration is also a tedious task, and cannot be done by an average user who does not have advanced knowledge of computers and/or networking.

Lack of Independence

Since most networks have a centralized server and dependent clients, the client users lack any freedom whatsoever. Centralized decision making can sometimes hinder how a client user wants to use his computer.
Computer networks have had a profound effect on the way we communicate with each other today, and have made our life easier. From the World Wide Web (www) to your local office LAN, computers have become indispensable in daily life, and networks have become a necessity in most businesses. If networks are designed and configured and having in mind its pros and cons, they are the best piece of facility you could ever have.

List of Computer Programming Languages

Programming language is the process of developing and implementing various sets of instructions to enable a computer to do a certain task. These instructions are considered computer programs and help the computer to operate smoothly. The language used to program computers is not understood by an untrained eye. 

Computer programming continues to be a necessary process as the Internet continues to expand. They are based on certain syntactic and semantic rules, which define the meaning of each of the programming language constructs. The syntactic and the semantic rules of every programming language define the language implementation. Programming languages provide computer programmers with the means to express computer algorithms.


INTERPRETED PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES
The programming languages that are implemented by means of an interpreter are known as interpreted languages. Interpreters execute the source code directly by translating the source code into an intermediate representation.

Examples Of Computer Software

Software is a gathering of programs that helps you communicate with the hardware of the computer. There are different types of computer software for distinctive purposes. In looking into computers, the first stage typically, is to understand the major types of software, their uses, and applications. In this article, I have made a list of computer software categorized by their types.

Examples of Computer Software

System Software

System software coordinates the complete system hardware and provides an environment or platform for all the other types of software to work in. It is a collection of software like operating system (System software Examples - Microsoft Windows XP, Mac OS, Linux, Windows Vista, Ubuntu etc), device drivers and utilities. There are many types of operating systems for different purposes.

Application Software

Application software is the software that helps the user perform the tasks of his choice. The various application software examples are MS Office, Openoffice, Media Player, MS Access etc. Educational software, media development software, antivirus software, etc. are the different types of software applications.

Programming Software

Programming software is used to write other software programs and applications. The various programming language editors, like Eclipse- a java language editor, come under this category. The various examples of programming software are Turbo C, Xilinx, Assembler 805, MySQL etc. Compilers, debuggers, Integrated Development Environment (IDE), etc. are the types of programming software. Apart from the above major types of software there are many others like -

Shareware - Shareware is usually software that is distributed for free on a trial basis. It can be shared without violation of any laws. Hence the name. Examples Bearshare, Kazaa, etc.

Registry Cleaners - When you install a lot of software, games, etc. your registry gets clogged. Registry cleaners are used to clean up or delete all the invalid registry entries. This speeds up your computer. Examples- TuneUp Utilities, Eusing, etc.

Content Control Software - This software allows you to control the content that can be accessed by a user on a computer. There are content control applications for internet browsers too. Example- Parental control software, etc.

Project Management Software - As its name suggests, project management software is a software package that helps many users to work on a project simultaneously. You can schedule events, network with the other users, allocate resources, etc. with the help of a project management software. Example- Microsoft Office Project server, Mac Project, Hyper Office, 24 seven Office, etc.

Utility Software - It is used for the management of computer hardware and application software installed on a computer. Also known as service routines, they are usually small programs that help you manage your computer better. Example- Disk Fragmentors, Disk cleaners, etc.

Open Source Software - This is a type of software whose source code is open. That is anyone can make changes to it and release their own version of it. Example- Android OS, OpenOffice, etc. There are more open source software examples that you can check out.

Browsers - Browsers are software that let you surf or browse the Internet. Example- Internet Explorer, Safari, Mozilla Firefox, etc.

This is only an overview of the computer software. Everyday, new types of software are being invented and the list of their examples can go on and on. Hence have given only a gist of the scenario.
