Latest Samsung Galaxy S5 TV Commercial Shows its Water-Resistant Body

The water and dust resistant body of the Samsung Galaxy S5 has been one of its biggest assets since launch. In the latest TV commercial, Samsung has decided to show off this ability to full effect.

The commercial shows kids spraying water on the phone, as kids are ought to do. One shot even shows the phone covered in flour. But thanks to the sealed design, neither of these are problems as you can just wash or wipe the phone and it’ll be good as new.

Check out the new commercial below.

Fire at Samsung Data Center Building in South Korea Causes Website to go Down

A Samsung data center caught fire today, shutting down Samsung.com.

That wasn’t the only tech casualty from the fire, however, as various Samsung products, including Smartphones and TVs, were adversely affected.

The center that went up in flames was the Samsung SDS building in Gwacheon, South Korea. Users weren’t able to access select Samsung applications from their phones, tablets, and Smart TVs as a result of the damage.

The problem was promptly resolved, however, and the outage caused by the fire ended at around 6.15AM this morning. If you’re a glutton for seeing buildings ablaze, check out the YouTube clip below.

Korean news outlets have reported that there weren’t any casualties as a result of the fire (thankfully). The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.
It does seem a bit strange that a fire in one location would cause such a widespread issue for Samsung’s user base. Does anyone think that this is unusual?

10 Hidden Features you didn't Know Your Galaxy S5 Could Do

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has been on the market for some time now, and it came with dozens of reviews and hands-on posts hitting the web, fans of the device probably already know about most of its main features.

Without further delay, here are Samsung’s top 10 hidden features that weren’t really advertised in Samsung’s promotion of the Galaxy S5 have been released today.

Galaxy s5

All of the key selling points: its camera, dust and water resistance, and built-in heart rate monitor have been rightfully pimped in advertisements, but here’s a list of a few things you may not have known the Galaxy S5 was capable of.

1.)   You can write on it with a pencil.

The screen is so sensitive to touch that you could use an actual pencil point to write on it. Why anyone would want to scratch up their screen and simultaneously stain it with lead, is of course, beyond us. All you need to do is dig into the menu settings and increase the device’s touch sensitivity.

2.) Tilt to make a playlist:

That’s right, if you’re listening to a certain type of song and then tilt your phone horizontally, your Galaxy S5 will automatically look for songs that are stored in your phone that are similar to the one you’re listening to. This makes setting the perfect music, for the perfect mood, an easier endeavour. If it works correctly, that is.

3.) Quickly access apps with Toolbox:

You can use Toolbox to create a small sidebar that displays your favourite apps when you press and hold the small white icon that hovers across all pages on your home-screen. Samsung Touchwiz users from back in the day will remember this little set up from older, non-Android, Samsung touch screen handsets. Just enable it in your settings and you can get to toolboxing.

4.) The Galaxy S5 has a privacy mode:

You can hide certain documents or pictures that only become accessible with a certain unlock pattern. You just need to go into the settings, select which files you want protected, and then enter a special unlock pattern or pin code. When you unlock your phone, you or whoever has access to it won’t be able to see these files unless that special unlocks code have been entered.

5.) The Galaxy S5 has a kid’s mode:

You need to download the Kids mode app and when you do; you can turn your Galaxy S5 into a more child-friendly, cute multimedia device for your little ones. It features a simplified, cute design that is easier to children to navigate, special applications that you can download only for kids, app permissions that you set (don’t want you child playing GTA mobile, now do you?), and even set a time limit for how long they can use the phone.

6.) Access camera from the lock screen

Access your camera right from the lock screen by swiping the camera icon to the side. You’ll go straight into camera mode, saving you a bit of time to capture that picture perfect moment before it eludes you.

7.) Virtual Tour, Shot & More Mode:

The Galaxy S5′s camera now allows you to create .gif like images that help you to create a “virtual tour”. You take multiple photos of different areas to combine a type of “tour” to show your friends and family. Pretty cool panoramic stuff. Shot and more just allows you to edit your pictures and add effects immediately after you take them.

8.) You can set your priority contacts with “Priority Senders”:

The top people you message in your messaging app can be set up top, so you have easier access to the ones you reach out to most.

9.) Check Caller Information at any time:

You can also check the information of a caller while you’re already talking on the phone. So any communication you’ve had with them, their email address, or whatever info you have saved on your phone, can be displayed at any time.

10.) Receive calls without leaving your current app:

The S5 also provides “Call Notification Pop-ups”, and you can receive an in-call pop up while you’re using another application, without having to exit the application.

I hope you have learnt something new about the S5? If so, are you more inclined to buy one now?

Samsung to pay Apple $930M, Sales Ban Denied

Apple versus Samsung largest-scale patent lawsuit, taking place in the US, is now over. Apple was awarded just under $930 million in damages, but its request for judge Koh to ban the infringing products was denied. This means that Samsung is free to continue selling the infringing devices in the US.

The first huge patent trial between Apple and Samsung started in 2012 and its first verdict was for Apple to receive $1.05 billion for the damages caused by its infringed patents. Samsung argued there were some discrepancies between the numbers the jury awarded Apple and after a new trial Samsung's fine was reduced to $929.8 million.

Now this case is officially closed and while Apple has won $930 million its request for permanent sales ban against Samsung was denied.

Apple has already started a new lawsuit against Samsung adding more relevant devices such as the Galaxy S III. Both sides failed to reach an agreement outside the courtroom, so the new trial will be starting in the end of this month.

We are yet to see if Samsung has taken the necessary measures to side-step the infringing technologies or if it will be facing another huge fine.

Samsung's New SM-750V Windows Phone Device Headed To Verizon

It's no longer a secret that Nokia has been dominating the Windows Phone game lately. There have been rumors of Samsung introducing a WP phone however, it looks like those rumors have gained more weight.

Evleaks has reported on their twitter account that a Samsung handset, codenamed “Huron” with the model number SM-W750V, will be headed to Verizon.
Not much is known about the device, except that it will be packing a 4.3” display and it will be running Windows Phone 8.1. Evleaks also mentioned that the Huron will look similar to the newer crop of Galaxy devices that are currently on the market.

Samsung SM-W750V will be a Windows Phone on Verizon. Codenamed Huron, it looks very similar to a late model Galaxy S.
— @evleaks (@evleaks) February 3, 2014

The screen size of the Huron is interesting. 4.3” is considered pocket-friendly by today's smartphone standards. Will this be a mid-range, run-of-the mill Windows Phone device? Or will Samsung try to create a WP handset that has both portability and power? We'll know for sure once the device is officially announced.
